Gynecomastia is intended for males who have an excess development of breast
tissue despite a good diet and proper exercise, and wish to have a firmer,
flatter and more masculine looking chest. Gynecomastia affects one or both
breasts in 40-60 percent of males.
This outpatient procedure, generally performed using general anesthesia,
involves making an inconspicuous incision near the lower edge of the areola
or at the base of the chest and removing excess fat and sometimes fibrous
tissue. It is commonly performed with liposuction. Following surgery, an
elastic garment is worn for 1-2 weeks. The results in the chest appearance
are permanent and significant.
During an initial consultation, Dr. Mallen evaluates the patient’s condition
and discusses any concerns. He may recommend consulting a primary care
physician to rule out other causes of gynecomastia. Dr. Mallen also shows
photos of other patients who have had gynecomastia, makes recommendations,
explains risks and provides specific pre and post-surgical instructions.
